Bengal in final phase of voting amidst Covid 19 wave

Final phase of voting is being held in Bengal today. 6 seats in Malda, 7 seats in Kolkata and 11 each in Birbhum and Murshidabad are voting in this 8th and final phase. There are 11860 centers with 283 candidates to be chosen from out of which 35 of them are women. 

Ministers Sadhan Pande and Shashi Panji are looking for re election in this phase. Birbhum district has been on high alert due to the history of violence attached to it. 

Covid 19 has massively affected this voting phase. Bengal has reported 17,207 new cases in the last 24 hours. 3821 cases have originated from Kolkata and 77 people have died.

One candidate is reportedly affected by the virus while independent candidate at Baisabnagar, Malda has succumbed to it. Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury, BJP candidate from English bazar who tested Covid-positive, is admitted to a hospital at Kolkata. Nandita Sinha, the wife of Trinamool Congress candidate Kajal Sinha who died of Covid, has filed a murder case against the Election Commission.

The counting of votes will be held on 2nd of May.
