As Cyclone Nivar wreaked havoc in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, floods caused by the torrential rainfall have surrounded many fishing villages and Irular settlements. This has greatly affected the people of the area in the coastal areas of Tiruvallur district, as the rainwater entered many homes and damaged properties.

The socially backward Irularcommunity is the worst affected in these floods. 200 Irular individualsfromKulathumedu in the Pulicat Panchayat, 100 individuals from SenchiyammanNagarin the KottaikuppamPanchayat and 50 individuals from Koraikkuppam fishing village in the Tangalperumpulam panchayat have been displaced from their unsafe homes and moved to the Storm and Flood Relief Centres in the vicinity.
