Massive Earthquake hits Assam – tremors felt in various part of Northeast
Strong earthquake originated from Tezpur, Assam, has hit the regions of North Bengal and other parts of Northeast.
The National Centre of Seismology reports that the earthquake measures a range of 6.0 to 6.4 in the Richter scale. There is said to be a low likelihood of casualties since the earthquake hit the regions at a shallow depth of 29 kilometers.
Reportedly, 6 aftershocks ranging between 3.2 to 4.7 were recorded after the first earthquake. The first earthquake was recorded at 7:51 AM in Assam.
Several buildings had suffered damages including a road in Sonitpur, Assam which developed a massive crack due to the impact of the earthquake.
Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Big earthquake hit Assam. I pray for the well-being of all and urge everyone to stay alert. Taking updates from all districts.”.
Prime Minister Modi said, “Spoke to Assam CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal Ji regarding the earthquake in parts of the state. Assured all possible help from the Centre. I pray for the well-being of the people of Assam” in a tweet.
The earthquake tremors were felt in parts of Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
