Sinha, the former BJP Leader had served as Union Finance minister twice- once in the Chandra Sekhar cabinet in 1990 and then again in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee ministry. He also held portfolio of External Affairs ministry in the Vajpayee cabinet.
A former IAS officer, he worked his way up political ranks starting from his days in Janata Dal. He had resigned from his position as the Vice President of the saffron party in 2009 and quit the party completely in April 2018 after having serious differences with the party leadership. He had stated during his resignation that the party’s condition and the democracy of India as a whole was in danger.
The octagenarian joined the Trinamool Congress today, 13th March 2021. After joining the TMC, Sinha said, “You must be surprised why at this age when I’d distanced myself from party politics. Why am I joining a party and turning active? I’d like to say the country is going through an extraordinary situation. The country is passing through a strange situation. Our values and principles are in danger. The strength of democracy lies in the robustness of its institutions, and all the institutions have been weakened systematically,” Sinha said.
Yashwant Sinha is known to be a bitter critic of the present Prime Minister Narendra Modi regime, has joined TMC just days ahead of the high-octane West Bengal assembly polls. He pledged support to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her fight against the BJP.
His son Jayant Sinha is the BJP MP from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand.
TMC Lok Sabha party leader Sudip Bandopadhyay said, “We welcome Yashwant Sinha to our party. His participation would strengthen our fight against the BJP in the elections,”.
